This is a photo of my great-grandmother Esther Lee [Richardson] Talbott (on the right). I am not sure who the woman on the left is. Based on other photos of she appears in, her first name may be Nannie. These women are both from the Halifax, Va area. As usual, I just could not be "wordless".

This is the tombstone of my GGGG-Grandmother Harriett Judd Thomas, mother of Mary Adaline Thomas. Her grave is at Baptist Chapel Cemetery near Broadway, NC. This was originally the Thomas family homeplace and her tombstone was placed in the family cemetery. (The church was not at this location until about 1913.) I am unsure of who the child is that is listed on the bottom of her tombstone. Based on the age of the child, it could not have been Harriet's as she would have been in her 80's at the time the child died. Another mystery to solve....

Treasure Chest Thursday Toddler's Jumper

This little toddler's outfit was worn by Garnet Talbott, son of Bossy and Esther Lee Talbott. The outfit is not in the best of conditions, but my great-grandmother's sewing skills are still clearly evident. Below you can see the detail of the stitching and the button holes.

Garnet R Talbott was the fourth child born to Bossy and Esther. He was born on 28 Jul 1922 and died 13 Feb 1924 during of influenza. It is nice to have something from his short life.

Haley Marriage Records of Halifax County, VA

I recently spent a happy couple of hours in the library reading microfilm. Specifically, I was reading marriage registration records for Halifax County, VA in the 1700's and 1800's. I was quite successful in my search and I think I did manage not to make a spectacle of myself doing the "happy dance". (Maybe that's why they hide the microfilm reader in the back corner.) I was primarily researching the Haley family, but while there I came across ancestors from 3 other lines--not all on the same side of the family. Insert more happy dancing here!

Here is what I learned about my Haley family in the records:

*Just a refresher...my ancestal line is: Winnie Haley (Carr)>William H (AKA George W) Haley> Stephen C (Case or Kas) Haley>Jesse Haley.

*I gained further confirmation that Stephen C (Case) Haley's parents were Jesse and Temperance Haley. Stephen and his bride Mary Anne Tribble were both born in Halifax County, VA and were 22 years old at the time of their marriage in 1860. Stephen C was listed as a farmer.

*I discovered the marriage record for Stephen C's (Case) brother Alex R Haley to Martha Guthrey 21 Aug 1856. (Cousins, this would have been Grandpa Haley's uncle.)

*Further back I found the record for the marriage of Jesse Haley and Temperance Owen on 14 Dec 1826. During this time period, the parents of the bride and groom were not listed, however Temperance's father Bracket Owen is listed as a "Signer of Certificate". (Jesse and Temperance would be my great x 4 grandparents. Bracket Owen would be my great x 5 grandfather!)

*I also found a record for a J J Haley who married Nannie Fisher in 1901. His father is listed as S. C. and no mother listed. I believe this may have been William H Haley's(aka George William) younger brother John.

*I found numerous other Haley grooms that I have not been able to determine their relationships to each other. I have some ideas about some possible relationships, but not anything I want to commit to writing as of yet. These grooms include Wyatt Haley (m. 1791), Royal Hailey (m. 1812), Lovelace Haley (m. 1800), Archibald Haley (m. 1796), Theophilus Haley (m. 1803), Samuel Haley (m. 1807), and John Haley (m. 1816). If there are any Haley cousins or researchers out there who recognize any of these men, I'd love to hear from you.


That's a lot of Haleys and a lot of marriages. I'm looking forward to sorting them out.

Haleys in the Agriculture Census

Recently I have been researching in the Agricultural Census records for Halifax County, VA. What a treasure trove these records can be for learning more about your ancestors. Today I will share about my GGG grandfather Jesse Haley. (For all you Haley cousins out there reading, this is Grandpa Will Haley's grandfather. Will's father was still living in Jesse's household and working the farm.)

I found Jesse Haley in the Ag census for both 1860 and 1870. His son Robert is living close and also listed in the 1860 Ag Census. I do not know the exact date of Jesse's birth, but estimate him to have been born about 1804. In the 1870 census he would have been about 66 years of age. He owned about 80 acres of land worth about $600. He owned one horse, 27 cows, 8 and pigs worth about $234. He grew wheat, corn, tobacco, beans, and potatoes. He also listed 50 pounds of butter produced on his farm during the year.

In comparing his assets from the 1860 Ag census to the 1870 Ag census, not much really changed with the exception of the value of the land. He owned the same 80 acres on both census reports. In 1860 the land is listed as having cash value of $600, but in 1870 the land value is listed as $240. I expect the occurrence of the Civil War between census years was the reason for the drop in land values. The other difference I noted was the absence of Jesse's son Robert Haley on the 1870 Ag census. Robert was killed during the Civil War.

Based on land records I have been reviewing, it appears that Jesse Haley died within months after the 1870 Ag census was taken.

Wordless Wednesday Unknown Child

This is another photo from my unknown collection. I believe the child is a boy because his hair is parted on the side. Part of his mother's dress and arms are also visible in the picture. I do know the photo was taken in Danville, VA. My best guess is this child is from the Richardson side of the family.
